About Troy C. Smith
Helping leaders see what others miss through
HOPE driven servant leadership
My Story
I grew up in the Bronx, New York, and spent the first 23 years of my life in New York City. That environment taught me how to connect with people from all walks of life. Different cultures, perspectives, and personalities forced me to see beyond the surface. This is why I coin myself, “A Student of Life.”
I also came to realize that we are all enrolled in what I call Adversity University. Life can hit hard and adversity does not discriminate. It can show up at any time. What defines us is how we rise when it does.
I am a follower of Christ, which is critical in how I see people and how I lead. I do not push my beliefs onto others. I value everyone by doing my best to model Christ-like behavior leaving people with an aroma of Christ. And what I have found is when people feel that level of authenticity and care, they become more open, more receptive, and more willing to grow.
My Leadership Journey
I spent over 24 years inside corporate America, leading teams, developing leaders, and navigating the real pressures organizations face every day.
Before I ever had a title, I was already leading. Helping people grow, stepping into gaps, and creating connection where it was missing.
Throughout my career:
- Promoted into leadership within 18 months
- Ranked number one Sales Supervisor in my first full year
- Led the first team in GEICO history to achieve a 100 percent sales A-call audit
- Became the number one Sales Manager companywide in 2021
- Promoted to Countrywide Sales Training Manager in 2022
Beyond performance, I was consistently drawn to the human side of leadership.
I served as a diversity facilitator, leading conversations that helped people better understand and connect across differences. I also had the opportunity to lead philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, including chairing United Way campaigns and creating engagement experiences that brought people together around a greater purpose.
Because leadership, at its core, is not just about results. It is about people, connection, and impact. But what I am most proud of is this. I have mentored and developed close to 100 individuals who went on to become leaders themselves.
Because leadership is not about what you achieve. It is about who you develop.
The Turning Point
Everything changed for me when my father passed.
As I was going through one of the most difficult seasons of my life, I began hearing something over and over again. “I understand what you are going through.” Although it was well intended, I realized something that was triggering, and it made me pause. They did not understand. They could not.
No one could fully grasp the complexity of the relationship I had with my father. A relationship that moved from dysfunction to healing into a deep bond and friendship. That moment opened my eyes. It made me realize how often we, as a society, use language that unintentionally minimizes people instead of honoring their experience.
We say speak from habit, not out of awareness. Often in doing so, we can devalue people without ever intending to. That realization changed how I communicated forever, especially as a leader. I vowed to become more intentional about the words I use, the tone I carry, and the awareness I bring into every conversation. I became deeply committed to studying leadership, communication, and human behavior at a higher level.
In 2016, I became a certified speaker, trainer, and coach with the John Maxwell Team, and through years of experience, research, and application, I developed the Teach, Model, and Coach framework.
The Mission
The Teach, Model, and Coach framework was built on one simple belief. Every person deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. When leaders teach with clarity, model consistency, and coach with intention, while creating a safe space, everything changes. Teams do not just perform. They grow, they stay, they thrive.
The Leap
At the height of my career, with stability, recognition, income, and influence, I made one of the most important decisions of my life. I walked away. Not because I had to. Because I was called to. I took a leap of faith, stepping away from a successful corporate career at GEICO to fully pursue a mission greater than myself. A purpose driven calling in which I believe God placed on my heart. To spread hope in a way that creates real change. To help leaders lead differently. To help people see more clearly.
Today
Today, I partner with executives, leadership teams, nonprofit organizations, and growing businesses that are ready to lead at a higher level. Not through control, but through connection. Not through pressure, but through purpose. If you are ready to lead in a way that produces results and earns trust, I would be honored to walk alongside you.
